Hours, prices and access verified by the Hallstatt Tours team — last checked 2026-09-26.
Prices, hours in the village, the salt mine, the Skywalk, the boat, children and
refunds, answered from the operators' own listings and the village's official pages. Choosing
between Hallstatt tickets? The answers below settle most of it.
Two answers matter more than the rest. First, no fare buys entry to Hallstatt: the village is
free, and a fare buys the journey, a guide or a car. Second, no tour here includes the salt mine,
and only one includes a boat, so the fare you book is rarely the whole cost of the day.
After that, it is time. Most of a day tour is the road, and the hours you get in the village
run from two to four. Check that figure on each tour before you choose.
How much do Hallstatt tours cost?
From $62 a person for a coach day from Vienna, without its Skywalk option; the other Vienna days cost $68 to $114. From Salzburg, the half day costs $96 and the day with the Sound of Music $159. A private car from Salzburg costs $533 for up to four, and a private walk in the village starts at $299 a group.
Is there an entrance fee for Hallstatt?
No. The village has no gate and is free to walk at any hour. You pay for what is inside it: the salt mine (€49 with the funicular), the funicular to the Skywalk (€29 return), the lake boat (€18), the
Bone House (€2) and the museum (€12).
Do I need to book in advance?
In summer and early autumn, book a few days ahead: the coaches from Vienna and Salzburg fill, and a private car takes one group a day. Every tour listed here refunds in full up to 24 hours before it starts, so booking early costs you nothing.
How long do Hallstatt day tours give you in the village?
About two hours on the days that add Salzburg or the Sound of Music, 2.5 on the Salzburg half day, about three on most Vienna days and up to 3.5 on some. The private car from Salzburg gives you four. Coaches must stay at least 2 hours 20 minutes under the village's own slot rule.
Is the salt mine included on any tour?
No. No tour listed here includes it, and the Salzburg half day and the Sound of Music day both say there is no time for it. The mine opens daily until 6 January 2027, at €49 with the funicular and from age 4, so allow half a day or stay the night.
Is the Skywalk open?
Yes. The rebuilt funicular and the
World Heritage Skywalk reopened on 29 August 2026, and the return ride costs €29 (€14 for children). The footpath up is closed for building work, so the funicular is the only way. Some Vienna days sell the Skywalk as an option on top of the fare.
Which Hallstatt tour includes a boat ride?
One Vienna day includes a 25-minute crossing on the lake from 1 April to 31 October; in winter its fare takes you into the Bone House instead. On any other tour you can buy the round trip from the village landing, about 50 minutes for €18, in the summer season.
Vienna or Salzburg: which is the better base?
Salzburg, if you can choose: the drive is 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so a day from there has room for
Gosausee, St. Gilgen or the Sound of Music. From Vienna it is about eight hours on the road for two to 3.5 in the village. The Vienna days are the cheapest per person.
Will a guide show me around the village?
On some days. The days sold with a guided tour in Hallstatt walk you round for about an hour, then leave you free; on most others the guide stays with the coach, and the private cars come with a driver who is not a guide. For a guide of your own, book a walking tour.
Can I do a Hallstatt tour with the Sound of Music?
Yes. A ten-hour day from Salzburg gives you about two hours in Hallstatt in the morning, then the original Sound of Music tour in the afternoon, with Schloss Leopoldskron, the gazebo and
Mondsee. The two halves run on separate buses, with a change back in Salzburg.
Are there private tours?
Yes: private cars from Salzburg, priced per group of up to four or per person, from Prague for up to three, and from the Danube cruise ports at Linz and Passau for up to seven. In the village itself, a private walk gives you your own guide for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Can children come?
Most tours take them, with limits: the 7 TRAVEL days from Vienna are not suitable under 3, the private lakes day from Salzburg not under 4, and the e-bike ride starts at age 10. The salt mine admits children from 4.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Most coach days say they are not suitable for wheelchair users, and the village lanes are steep and cobbled in places. The private day from Prague lists wheelchair-accessible transport. Ask the operator before you book.
What is the best time to visit Hallstatt?
Late spring, or September and October: every sight is open and the days are still long. July and August are the busiest and the wettest months, and from November the Bone House opens only Wednesday to Sunday.
Do I need cash on the day?
Travellers on several tours advise bringing some euros for cafés and small entry fees in the village. Treat it as travellers' advice rather than a rule: carry a little cash as well as your card.
How do I get to Hallstatt by train?
Trains from Vienna and Salzburg change at Attnang-Puchheim onto the Salzkammergut line to Hallstatt station, which is across the lake from the village. The Stefanie ferry meets the trains all year and costs €4 one way. Check the timetable for the day you travel.
How do I get to Hallstatt from Salzburg by bus?
Take the bus to Bad Ischl, about 90 minutes, then the regional bus via Gosaumühle to Hallstatt
Lahn, 40 to 50 minutes more. Check the day's timetable before you set out.
Where do coaches stop in Hallstatt?
At Lahn, the south end of the village, near the funicular. Every coach books an entry and an exit slot at least 2 hours 20 minutes apart, so your return time is fixed. Some operators say they wait five minutes at most, so be back early.
Can I drive and park?
Yes, in the P1, P2 and P3 car parks outside the centre, where the first 15 minutes are free and then you pay by the hour. The village centre itself is closed to visitors' cars.
What is the Bone House?
The charnel house beside the Catholic church, holding over 600 painted skulls. Entry is €2 (€0.50 for children), and it opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 between June and September, with shorter hours the rest of the year.
Is the Hallstatt museum worth it?
Museum Hallstatt on Seestraße tells the salt-mining and Iron Age story the village gave its name to. Adult entry is €12 in 2026, and it opens every day, from 10:00 to 18:00 between May and September.
Where is the famous postcard view?
On Gosaumühlstraße, a short walk north of the
Marktplatz. Early morning, before the first coaches arrive, is the quietest time to stand there.
What is Schloss Ort?
Schloss Ort is a white island schloss on the Traunsee at Gmunden, joined to the shore by a wooden bridge. Several Vienna days stop there for 30 to 40 minutes on the way to Hallstatt, and in 2026 it opens daily from 10:30 to 16:00 in season.
Do any Vienna tours also visit Salzburg?
Yes. Some Vienna days give you about two hours in Hallstatt and then three in Salzburg, over about 14 hours door to door. The trade is less time in the village for a second city.
Is there a half-day Hallstatt tour?
From Salzburg, yes: 5.5 hours in all, with 2.5 hours on your own in the village and the way back through Gosau. It leaves from the kiosk on
Mirabellplatz.
What does a walking tour of Hallstatt cover?
A 2-hour private walk starts on the Marktplatz and takes in the Catholic parish church and the Lutheran church by the lake, finishing outside the museum. A 1.5-hour private walk starts at the Franz Joseph I monument, and you shape the route with your guide on the spot.
What is the e-bike tour?
A guided ride of five to seven hours from Gosau over the alpine pastures, with 900 to 1,400 metres of climbing, for up to six riders aged 10 and over. It never goes into Hallstatt village itself.
Can I visit Hallstatt from a Danube cruise?
Linz and Passau are the ports. A private tour there builds a nine-hour day around your ship and can include Hallstatt, Salzburg or the Eagle's Nest; you choose, because not all of them fit in one day.
When does the salt mine close for the year?
Its 2026 season runs to 6 January 2027, with shorter hours, 09:30 to 15:00, from 25 October. The funicular to the Skywalk keeps the same season and runs 09:00 to 16:30 from 25 October.
How cold is Hallstatt in winter?
Bad Aussee, about 15 km away and 150 m higher, averages -2.1 °C in January and -1.1 °C in December (GeoSphere Austria normals). Pack for ice on the lanes.
What happens if the coach leaves without me?
Some Vienna operators say they wait five minutes at most and do not refund a missed bus. Every coach gives you a return time, so be back ten minutes early.
Can I cancel a Hallstatt tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts, and the e-bike ride also offers a new date or a refund if the weather cancels it.
