What a walking tour of Hallstatt is
It is a guide of your own, on foot, in the village. You get to Hallstatt yourself, by car,
train, bus or coach, and meet the guide there. For 1.5 or 2 hours you walk the lanes, the
square and the lakeshore with somebody who can tell you what you are looking at.
That is the one thing most day tours do not give you. The coach days from Salzburg leave
the village to you, and so do many from Vienna. The private cars come with a driver who is not a
guide. A walk fills exactly that gap.
Why choose a walking tour
Somebody explains the village
Salt was mined here as early as the Middle Bronze Age, the village gave its name to an
Iron Age culture, and a fire in 1750 burned its timber houses. A guide turns a pretty view into
a story you can follow street by street.
It starts where you already are
One walk meets at the Franz Joseph monument on the lakeside road, the other on the
Marktplatz. There is no coach timetable to keep, and no drive.
The churches, with the context
The two-hour walk spends half an hour in the Catholic parish church on the hill and half an
hour in the Lutheran church by the lake, begun in 1859.
It fits around a day tour
If you arrive by coach with three hours free, an hour and a half with a guide still leaves
time for lunch and the view from the north end.
Walking tours vs exploring on your own
Most visitors walk the village alone during a coach day's free time, and it is free. Here is
what a guide adds.
| Walking tour | On your own | Guided walk on a coach day |
|---|
| What you pay | $299 a group, or $449 a person | Nothing | Part of the coach fare |
| Length | 1.5 or 2 hours | As long as you like | About 1 hour |
| Who is with you | Your group only | Nobody | The rest of the coach |
| Churches | Inside both, on the longer walk | On your own | Usually from outside |
| Questions | Any, for as long as it runs | Nobody to ask | In the group |
| Getting there | Your own way | Your own way | Included |

If you only want the view and the photographs, walk alone. If you want the salt, the
fire and the churches to make sense, book a guide.
What you get, and what you don't
- Included: a local guide for your group, on foot, for 1.5 or 2 hours.
- The route: set on the two-hour walk (the square, both churches, the
museum); agreed with your guide on the spot on the shorter one.
- Not included: transport to Hallstatt, tips, and every paid door: the
museum, the Bone House, the funicular and the salt mine.
- Accessibility: the shorter walk welcomes strollers; neither suits
wheelchairs, as the lanes are steep.
Ninety minutes, for up to fifteen people
One fare of $299 covers the whole group. You meet at the monument by the road and shape the route with your guide.

Planning a walking tour
- Budget: $299 for a group of up to fifteen, or from $449 a
person for the walk on the square, less each for a bigger group.
- Timing: book the first slot of the morning, before the coaches arrive, or
late afternoon after they leave.
- Getting there: our visitor guide covers the train, the ferry, the bus and
parking; the map of the village marks both meeting points.
- Booking: you can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
The guide to going without a tour shows how to reach the village by public transport, and our things to do in the village lists
what to see after the walk.
Who should choose something else
- If you have no way to reach Hallstatt. A walk includes no transport. A
Hallstatt day tour from Vienna with an hour's guided walk covers both, from $62 without the Skywalk option.
- If you are on your own on a budget. A private guide for one is costly; a
coach day's group walk is cheaper.
- If you use a wheelchair. Neither walk suits one. The lakeshore road is
level, and you can see much of the village from it.
- If you want to go up the mountain. No walk climbs to the salt mine or the
Skywalk. Take the funicular after your walk.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the walking tours start?
In the village itself: one at the Franz Joseph monument on the lakeside road, the other on the square. You get there on your own, by coach, car, train or bus.
What does a walking tour of Hallstatt cover?
A 2-hour private walk starts on the Marktplatz and takes in the Catholic parish church and the Lutheran church by the lake, finishing outside the museum. A 1.5-hour private walk starts at the Franz Joseph I monument, and you shape the route with your guide on the spot.
Do the walks go inside the churches and the museum?
The two-hour walk spends half an hour in each church and ends outside the museum, whose ticket you buy yourself. The shorter walk pays for no doors at all.
Is a walking tour hard going?
The lanes climb steeply behind the lake, and the path to the parish church has steps. The shorter walk welcomes strollers; neither is suitable for wheelchairs.
Will a guide show me around the village?
On some days. The days sold with a guided tour in Hallstatt walk you round for about an hour, then leave you free; on most others the guide stays with the coach, and the private cars come with a driver who is not a guide. For a guide of your own, book a walking tour.
Where is the famous postcard view?
On Gosaumühlstraße, a short walk north of the Marktplatz. Early morning, before the first coaches arrive, is the quietest time to stand there.
Can I cancel a Hallstatt tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts, and the e-bike ride also offers a new date or a refund if the weather cancels it.
