Hallstatt Private Tours
Hours, prices and access verified by the Hallstatt Tours team — last checked 2026-09-26.
Hallstatt private tours put your group, and nobody else, in the car or with the guide. Most are priced for the group, and most of the drivers are drivers, not guides, so check both before you book.

What a private tour of Hallstatt is
It is the same village with nobody else in your vehicle, and a day shaped around you. There
are two kinds. The first is a car with a driver, from Salzburg, from Prague, or from your river
cruise ship at Linz or Passau. The second is a walk in the village with a local guide for your
group only.
The difference that matters most is who is with you. Most of the drivers are exactly that:
they drive, they wait, and they say plainly that they are not guides. The walks are the
opposite. They have no vehicle at all, and the guide is the whole point.
Why choose a private tour
You set the time in the village
A coach books an entry and an exit slot with the village and leaves on time. A private car gives you up to
four hours, and on the Salzburg day that is a fixed part of the plan, not a hope.
Pickup where you are
The cars collect you at your hotel in Salzburg or Prague, or at your ship. The car from
Salzburg can drop you at the station or the airport on the way home.
The only way from Prague or a cruise port
No coach runs to Hallstatt from Prague, or from the Danube ports. The private cars do: eleven
to thirteen hours from Prague, nine from Linz or Passau.
Priced for a group
Most private fares are for the whole group, not per head. A full car or a full walk costs far
less each than the headline figure suggests.
Private tours vs a shared coach day
The comparison most people make is with the cheapest shared day. Here is how the private
options set against it, with the per-head cost worked out for a full group.
| Shared coach day | Private car | Private walk |
|---|
| What you pay | $62 to $159 a person | $533 to $1,579 a group | $299 a group, or $449 a person |
| Per head, full group | The same | $133 (four) to $386 (three) | $19 (fifteen) |
| Who else is there | The rest of the coach | Nobody | Nobody |
| Time in the village | 2 to 3.5 hours | About 2.5 to 4 hours | 1.5 to 2 hours, on foot |
| Guide in the village | On some days | No: a driver | Yes |
| Pickup | A meeting point | Hotel or ship | You meet in the village |

For two people on a budget, the shared coach is the clear buy. From three or four, the car
from Salzburg starts to compete, and it gives you more time.
What you get, and what you don't
- In the cars: the vehicle, the driver and water. The Prague car adds snacks
by a lake; the lakes day from Salzburg adds parking, tolls and taxes.
- On the walks: a local guide for your group alone, and no transport.
- Not a guide: the drivers from Salzburg and Prague. The cruise-port day is
the one with a driver-guide.
- Not included: lunch, tips, and the paid sights: the salt mine, the
funicular, the boat, the Bone House and the museum.
From Prague, for up to three
Eleven to thirteen hours from your hotel, snacks by a lake on the way, and wheelchair-accessible transport and infant seats listed.

Planning a private tour
- Budget: $299 for a walk for up to fifteen, $533 for the car
from Salzburg, $1,159 from Prague for up to three, $1,579 from a cruise port for up to
seven.
- Length: 1.5 or 2 hours on foot; 8 hours from Salzburg; 9 from a ship; 11 to
13 from Prague.
- What to send: your hotel for a car; your ship's name, dock and times for
the cruise day.
- Booking: early for summer, as each car takes one group a day. You can
cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Our plan for one day in the village shows how to spend four hours, and the ticket prices for every paid sight lists what each door costs once
you are there.
Who should choose something else
- If you travel alone or as a couple on a budget. A private car costs several
times a coach seat. A Hallstatt day tour from Vienna starts at $62 without the Skywalk option.
- If you want a guide in the car. Most drivers are not guides. Pair the car
with a walk, or pick the cruise-port day with its driver-guide.
- If Hallstatt must be the stop on a cruise day. The port day offers it as
one choice among several. Say so when you book, and allow for the drive.
- If you want the Sound of Music too. The coach day from Salzburg covers
both; no private option here does.
Frequently asked questions
Will a private driver show me round the village?
No. The drivers from Salzburg and Prague say plainly they are not licensed guides, and they wait while you walk. For a guide in the village, add a private walk.
Is a private tour priced per person or per group?
Most are per group, up to three, four, seven or fifteen people. The private lakes day from Salzburg is per person, at $284, and so is the walk on the square, whose fare falls as the group grows.
Are there private tours?
Yes: private cars from Salzburg, priced per group of up to four or per person, from Prague for up to three, and from the Danube cruise ports at Linz and Passau for up to seven. In the village itself, a private walk gives you your own guide for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Can I reach Hallstatt from a river cruise?
Yes, from Linz or Passau, in a nine-hour private day built round your ship. Give the ship's name, dock and times when you book, and say that Hallstatt is the stop you want.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Most coach days say they are not suitable for wheelchair users, and the village lanes are steep and cobbled in places. The private day from Prague lists wheelchair-accessible transport. Ask the operator before you book.
Can children come?
Most tours take them, with limits: the 7 TRAVEL days from Vienna are not suitable under 3, the private lakes day from Salzburg not under 4, and the e-bike ride starts at age 10. The salt mine admits children from 4.
Can I cancel a Hallstatt tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts, and the e-bike ride also offers a new date or a refund if the weather cancels it.
