Hallstatt Tours

Where to Stay in Hallstatt

Where you stay decides how much of Hallstatt you get. A night in the village gives you the lanes before and after the coaches; a base in Salzburg or Vienna means a day tour with two to four hours there. Before you book Hallstatt day tour, pick the base that fits the day you want.

How to choose a base for Hallstatt

Hallstatt is small, about 740 residents on a strip of shore between the lake and the mountain, and the centre is closed to visitors' cars. Rooms in the village are few, and they go first.

Each base below carries the same four labels: how you get in, the tours that start there, who it suits and the trade-off. No hotels are named. Pick the place, then book what suits you in it.

Most stays turn on the salt mine and the car. Do you want the salt mine, which needs half a day? And do you have a car? Without one, the train and the bus both work, but the day tours from Salzburg and Vienna are the simplest way in.

In the village: Hallstatt itself

A night in Hallstatt is the only way to see it empty. The coaches come on fixed slots and leave again, so the early morning and the evening are yours.

Hallstatt village

Getting in
By train to the station across the lake, then the Stefanie ferry, €4 one way; by bus to Lahn; or by car to the P1 car park, which runs a hotel ticket for guests in the centre.
Tours from here
The private walks meet in the village, at the Franz Joseph I monument or on the square. No day tour picks up here.
It suits
The salt mine without a rush, sunrise photos, and anyone who wants the village at night.
The trade-off
The fewest rooms and the busiest lanes from late morning to mid-afternoon.

Stay here if the Hallstatt Salt Mine is your reason to come. The mine opens at 09:30, and you can be on the first funicular before the coaches arrive.

Across the lake: Obertraun

Obertraun sits at the south end of the lake, facing Hallstatt across the water, below the Dachstein.

Obertraun

Getting in
Round the south end of the lake by road to Lahn, or, from the end of May to September, on the lake round trip, which calls there.
Tours from here
None collect you here; the walks meet in Hallstatt.
It suits
The Krippenstein cable cars and caves, which open daily from 1 May to 1 November 2026, and a view of the village from across the lake.
The trade-off
Out of the boat season you need the road or the bus to reach the village.

North of the lake: Bad Goisern

Bad Goisern lies north of the lake, on the Salzkammergut railway that runs down to Hallstatt station. The Sound of Music day from Salzburg drives through it on the way in.

Bad Goisern

Getting in
The train south to Hallstatt station, then the ferry across.
Tours from here
None pick up here.
It suits
A quieter, cheaper base on the railway, with the village one short train ride away.
The trade-off
Every visit to the village means a train and a ferry, and the last ones set your evening.

The Gosau valley: Gosau and its lake

Gosau is the valley west of Hallstatt, under the Dachstein and the Gosaukamm, with Gosausee at its head. The Salzburg half day and the Sound of Music day both drive back through it.

Gosau

Getting in
The regional bus from Bad Ischl serves Hallstatt, Obertraun and Gosau; by car it is the shortest drive of these bases.
Tours from here
The e-bike day starts at a workshop in Gosau, on Wirtsweg, and rides the pastures to the lakes. It never goes into Hallstatt itself.
It suits
Walkers and riders, and anyone who wants the mountain lake early.
The trade-off
Hallstatt is a bus or drive away, not a walk.

Bad Ischl: the town with the bus connections

Bad Ischl is the old spa town where the regional buses meet, and the emperor's summer villa stands in its park.

Bad Ischl

Getting in
From Salzburg the bus takes about 90 minutes; from Bad Ischl the regional buses reach Hallstatt Lahn in 40 to 50 minutes. Check the day's timetable.
Tours from here
None start here, though most tours from Salzburg drive through.
It suits
Travellers without a car, and the Kaiservilla, where the park and house tour cost €24.
The trade-off
A bus ride each way, and the last bus back sets your evening.

Salzburg or Vienna, with a day tour

Most people who see Hallstatt sleep in Salzburg or Vienna and come on a day tour. The choice between the two is the real one.

Salzburg

Getting in
A day tour, a private car, or the bus via Bad Ischl.
Tours from here
The half day and the Sound of Music day meet at the Panorama kiosk on Mirabellplatz; the private cars collect you at your hotel.
It suits
A shorter day: the half day gives you 2.5 hours in the village and is back in about 5.5.
The trade-off
Salzburg rooms cost more in summer, and the Sound of Music day spends its afternoon back near Salzburg.

Vienna

Getting in
A day tour; the train works too, with a change at Attnang-Puchheim.
Tours from here
The Vienna days meet behind the opera, at Albertinaplatz, on Operngasse or at Opernring 2, between 7:00 and 7:20.
It suits
A first trip to Austria, and the lowest fares per person.
The trade-off
About eight hours on the road for two to 3.5 hours in the village.

If you arrive from Mirabellplatz you are home by mid-afternoon. From Albertinaplatz, the Vienna days are back about 8:15 pm. Farther out, a private car can collect you in Prague, or at your ship in Linz or Passau.

Questions about where to stay

Should I stay overnight in Hallstatt?
Yes, if you want the village without the crowds or the salt mine without a rush. The coaches come on fixed slots in the middle of the day, so the evening and the early morning are quiet. Rooms are few, so book early.
Vienna or Salzburg: which is the better base?
Salzburg, if you can choose: the drive is 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so a day from there has room for Gosausee, St. Gilgen or the Sound of Music. From Vienna it is about eight hours on the road for two to 3.5 in the village. The Vienna days are the cheapest per person.
Can I stay near Hallstatt without a car?
Yes. Bad Goisern is on the railway to Hallstatt station, and Bad Ischl has the buses to Hallstatt Lahn. The village centre is closed to visitors' cars anyway.
Where should I stay for the Dachstein caves?
In Obertraun, at the south end of the lake, where the Krippenstein cable cars start. They run daily from 1 May to 1 November 2026.
Can I drive and park?
Yes, in the P1, P2 and P3 car parks outside the centre, where the first 15 minutes are free and then you pay by the hour. The village centre itself is closed to visitors' cars.
Can I visit Hallstatt from a Danube cruise?
Linz and Passau are the ports. A private tour there builds a nine-hour day around your ship and can include Hallstatt, Salzburg or the Eagle's Nest; you choose, because not all of them fit in one day.

Where these facts come from

The ferry, the boat and the bus connections are the operators' and the village's own pages, checked 26 September 2026. The Krippenstein season and the Kaiservilla price are each operator's. Every pickup and meeting point comes from each tour's own listing.
