What a Hallstatt day tour from Vienna is
It is a very long day on a coach. You leave central Vienna at about seven in the morning,
drive west for around four hours, spend two to three and a half hours in the village, and drive
back. The round trip is about 600 km. Roughly eight hours of the day are on the road.
That sounds like a poor trade, and for some travellers it is. But Hallstatt is hard to reach
from Vienna any other way in a day. The train needs a change and then a ferry across the lake,
and a car means eight hours at the wheel. The coach solves all of that in one seat, for less
than the train and the ferry usually cost together.
The Vienna days differ in what they do with the hours you have. Some walk you through the
village. Some stop at a lake palace on the way. One puts you on the water, and some split the
day with Salzburg.
Why choose a day tour from Vienna
A guided walk, or the village on your own
Some days include an hour's guided walk in Hallstatt before your free time. On others the
guide stays with the coach, points things out on the road, and leaves the village to you. Read
the second line of each card: it says which.
A stop at Schloss Ort
Several days break the drive at Gmunden for 30 to 40 minutes at Schloss Ort, the white
island palace on the Traunsee with its long wooden bridge. It is the only stop on the way that
most travellers remember.
The one fare with the boat
From April to October, one Vienna day includes a 25-minute crossing of the
Hallstätter See after the walk. In winter the fare takes you into the Bone House instead.
On every other day, the boat is yours to buy on the spot.
Salzburg in the same day
Some long days add three hours in Salzburg after about two in Hallstatt. You see two places,
but you get less time in the village, and you are on the bus for fourteen hours.
Day tours from Vienna vs the train
You can do the trip yourself. Trains from Vienna change at Attnang-Puchheim onto the
Salzkammergut line, and Hallstatt station is across the lake, where the Stefanie ferry meets the
trains for €4 each way. Here is what the coach changes.
| Day tour from Vienna | Train and ferry |
|---|
| Door to door | 11 to 14 hours, fixed | As long as the timetable allows |
| Changes | None | One train change, then the ferry |
| Hours in the village | 2 to 3.5 | Your choice, if you stay the night |
| Someone to show you round | On some days, an hour's walk | Nobody |
| Extra stops | A lake palace, Salzburg or a boat on some days | None |
| What you pay | $62 to $114 a person | The rail fare, plus €8 for the ferry |

If you want to stay the night, or to reach the salt mine, the train is the better choice.
For one day and no planning, the coach wins.
What you get, and what you don't
- Always: the coach there and back, a guide or a coordinator on board, and
free time in the village.
- On some days: an hour's guided walk in Hallstatt, a stop at the lake
palace, three hours in Salzburg, or hotel pickup as a paid option.
- Once: the boat across the lake, from April to October only.
- As an option: the funicular to the platform above the village, sold as an
extra on some days. Their from-price is without it.
- Never: the salt mine. No Vienna day includes it, and three hours in the
village is not enough for it and lunch.
- Not included: food and drink, the Bone House (except on the boat day in
winter), the museum and tips.
The Vienna day that puts you on the lake
An hour's walk with a licensed guide, then a 25-minute crossing from April to October, then an hour free. In winter, the fare takes you into the charnel house instead.

Planning a day tour from Vienna
- Budget: $62 without the Skywalk option to $114 a person. The days that add
Salzburg or the boat cost the most.
- Meeting point: near the State Opera: Albertinaplatz, Operngasse or the
Opernring, depending on the day. Hotel pickup costs extra on most.
- When: most run daily; the busiest months are July and August. The boat is
in one fare only from April to October.
- Booking: a few days ahead in summer. You can cancel free up to 24 hours
before.
Our month-by-month guide has the season dates for every paid sight, and the guide to choosing between the tours sets every Vienna day
beside the Salzburg ones.
Who should choose something else
- If you hate long coach days. Eight hours on the road is the price of this
trip. Go to Salzburg first and take a Hallstatt tour from Salzburg instead: 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
- If you want the salt mine. No Vienna day has time for it. Stay the night
in the region, and read our ticket prices for every paid sight.
- If you travel with a toddler. Some days refuse under-3s, and thirteen hours
is hard on small children. A Hallstatt private tour from Salzburg takes infant seats.
- If you use a wheelchair. Most Vienna days say they are not suitable. The
private car from Prague is the one that lists accessible transport.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a day tour from Vienna?
Eleven to fourteen hours door to door. The round trip is about 600 km, and roughly eight hours of the day are spent on the road.
What time do the Vienna tours leave?
Early: the buses gather near the State Opera between about 7:00 and 7:20. Most are back in the evening, around 8:15 pm on the longer days.
Why do the Vienna fares differ so much?
Mostly for what the fare adds. The cheapest, $62 without the Skywalk option, gives you an hour's guided walk; $111 adds the boat from April to October; $114 adds three hours in Salzburg.
Will a guide show me around the village?
On some days. The days sold with a guided tour in Hallstatt walk you round for about an hour, then leave you free; on most others the guide stays with the coach, and the private cars come with a driver who is not a guide. For a guide of your own, book a walking tour.
Which Hallstatt tour includes a boat ride?
One Vienna day includes a 25-minute crossing on the lake from 1 April to 31 October; in winter its fare takes you into the Bone House instead. On any other tour you can buy the round trip from the village landing, about 50 minutes for €18, in the summer season.
Can young children come on a day from Vienna?
On most days they can, but some say not under 3, and infants need a seat of their own. Thirteen hours on a coach is hard on a toddler, so a day from Salzburg is kinder.
What happens if the coach leaves without me?
Some Vienna operators say they wait five minutes at most and do not refund a missed bus. Every coach gives you a return time, so be back ten minutes early.
Can I cancel a Hallstatt tour?
Yes. Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before it starts, and the e-bike ride also offers a new date or a refund if the weather cancels it.
