Hallstatt Tours

Hallstatt Map

Hallstatt is one lane long, squeezed between the lake and the mountain. Coaches and buses stop at Lahn at the south end, the square is in the middle, and the station is across the water. Find the spot printed on your Hallstatt guided tours booking here.

How the village is laid out

The village runs along the west shore of the lake, from Lahn in the south to the north end, with the Marktplatz in the middle. There is one road through it, Seestraße along the water, and the lanes climb from it up the slope.

The centre is closed to visitors' cars. Everyone arrives at one of three points: Lahn, by coach, bus or car; the landing at Hallstatt Markt, by ferry from the station; or the car parks outside the centre. From there, you walk.

Most day tours do not start in Hallstatt at all. They start in Vienna, Salzburg or farther away, and the table below lists every meeting point from the tours' own listings.

Lahn and the south end

Lahn is the south end of the village and the place most visitors first set foot. The regional buses stop at Hallstatt Lahn, and the coaches set down near here too.

The coaches
Every coach books an entry slot and an exit slot at least 2 hours 20 minutes apart. Your guide or driver tells you the exit time; be back before it.
The funicular
The new valley station of the Salzbergbahn is at Lahn: up to the platform and the salt mine, €29 return.
The car parks
P1 and P2 lie outside the centre, P2 at the funicular end; P3 is further out. The first 15 minutes are free, then you pay by the hour.

From Lahn you walk north along the lake road into the centre. Budget the walk into your time if your coach gives you two hours.

The Marktplatz and the centre

The Marktplatz is the square in the middle of the village, with the painted houses and the stone column. Almost everything a day visitor wants sits within a few minutes of it.

The churches
The Catholic church, with the Bone House beside it, is up the steps above the square; the Lutheran church with the white spire stands on the shore below.
The museum
Museum Hallstatt is at Seestraße 56. The market-square walk ends at its door.
The landing
The lake boat and the Stefanie ferry leave from Hallstatt Markt, on the shore by the centre.
The tourist office
Tourismusbüro Hallstatt, Seestraße 114. Monday to Friday 08:00 to 12:00 and 12:30 to 16:30; Saturdays from 9 May, 09:00 to 15:00; closed Sundays and holidays.

The two-hour private walk meets on the Marktplatz itself. The 1.5-hour private walk meets at the Franz Joseph I monument on the lake road, and ends there too.

The north end and the postcard view

North of the square, the lane continues along the shore to the viewpoint on Gosaumühlstraße. That is the classic picture: the houses, the Lutheran spire and the lake. It is a short walk from the square, and the reason the north end fills up at midday.

Please keep to the road there: people live in the houses behind the viewpoint.

The station and Obertraun, across the lake

Hallstatt station is on the other side of the lake, and there is no road from it into the village. The Stefanie ferry crosses to Hallstatt Markt all year to meet the trains, €4 one way. If your train is late, the ferry waits for the trains it is timed to.

Obertraun is at the south end of the lake, where the Krippenstein cable cars start. From the end of May to September the lake round trip calls there, about 50 minutes out and back from the village.

Where each tour starts

Match the meeting point on your booking to the table. Each entry comes from the tour's own listing, so the name on your voucher should match one of them.

Questions about getting around

Where do coaches stop in Hallstatt?
At Lahn, the south end of the village, near the funicular. Every coach books an entry and an exit slot at least 2 hours 20 minutes apart, so your return time is fixed. Some operators say they wait five minutes at most, so be back early.
Where do the private walks meet?
The two-hour walk meets on the Marktplatz and ends outside Museum Hallstatt. The 1.5-hour walk meets at the Franz Joseph I monument on the lake road and ends there too.
How do I get to Hallstatt by train?
Trains from Vienna and Salzburg change at Attnang-Puchheim onto the Salzkammergut line to Hallstatt station, which is across the lake from the village. The Stefanie ferry meets the trains all year and costs €4 one way. Check the timetable for the day you travel.
Can I drive and park?
Yes, in the P1, P2 and P3 car parks outside the centre, where the first 15 minutes are free and then you pay by the hour. The village centre itself is closed to visitors' cars.
Where is the famous postcard view?
On Gosaumühlstraße, a short walk north of the Marktplatz. Early morning, before the first coaches arrive, is the quietest time to stand there.
Can I walk from one end of the village to the other?
Yes, on the lake road, and most visitors do. The lanes above it are steep and stepped, so wheelchairs and pushchairs keep to the shore.

Where these facts come from

Every meeting point comes from the tour's own listing. The ferry, the funicular and the tourist office are each operator's own pages; the coach and parking rules are the village's, checked 26 September 2026.
