Thirteen hours from the centre of Vienna and back, with a live guide on the coach. About eight of them are on the motorway; you get half an hour at a white palace on a lake on the way, then about three hours in the village. Book the Skywalk option and the funicular ride up is part of your day; book without it and the fare drops to $74 a person.

Travellers name the guides, the punctual start and the two short breaks.
Home the same evening
Back behind the State Opera at about 8:15 pm, with two short breaks on the motorway.
The road west, and the one stop before the village
You leave from the Tourist Info on Albertinaplatz, behind the State Opera, or from your hotel if
you book the pickup option. The first hour and a half is motorway, then a 30-minute break at
Strengberg for coffee. The route runs about 600 km in all, roughly eight hours of driving, with
live commentary in English from the guide on board.
An hour later you reach Gmunden on the Traunsee and get 30 minutes at Schloss Ort, the white
lake palace at the end of a long wooden bridge. It is a photo stop: the coach does not wait for a
visit inside. From there it is about 100 minutes along the lakes to the village.
Three hours in Hallstatt, most of them yours
The coach parks at the south end of the village, where every coach in Hallstatt has to book
a slot of at least 2 hours 20 minutes. The first hour is sightseeing as you walk in along the
lake; the next two are free. That is enough for the lakeshore road, the square with its painted
houses, the two churches and the Bone House, whose painted skulls cost €2 to see. It is not
enough for the salt mine, which no day from Vienna includes.
Lunch comes out of that free time, and food is not in the fare, so bring a snack for the
coach. Three hours cover the village itself; if you want longer, a private car from Salzburg
gives four. Every day from the capital is compared on our page of
Hallstatt day tour from Viennas.
The Skywalk option: what it adds and what it costs
High above the village roofs, a platform on the mountainside looks straight down onto the
lake: the World Heritage Skywalk. The only way up is the Salzbergbahn funicular, rebuilt and
reopened on 29 August 2026, because the footpath into the high valley stays closed for
construction. The Skywalk option on this day builds that ride into your time in the village.
The $74 fare is the one without the Skywalk. The option costs more, and the
difference shows when you choose it. If you book the base fare, you can still go up on your own:
the funicular return costs €29 for adults and €14 for children aged 4 to 15 in 2026, and it runs
until 18:00 to 24 October, then until 16:30. Allow about an hour of your free time for it.
Important. The boat is not in this fare. From May to
October you can buy a ticket on the lakefront, but it takes time out of three hours. If a
crossing matters to you, the Vienna day with the boat included carries a
25-minute crossing from 1 April to 31 October.
The thirteen hours, stage by stage
Board. At the Tourist Info on Albertinaplatz, or at your central hotel on the pickup option. Your confirmation gives the time.
Motorway, then a break. About 1.5 hours to Strengberg, and 30 minutes there.
The lake palace. About an hour on, then 30 minutes at the wooden bridge.
Along the lakes. About 100 minutes to the village.
The village. About an hour of sightseeing, then two hours free, or the funicular and the Skywalk if you booked that option.
Back east. About two hours to the Enns South services, a 15-minute break, and two more hours to Vienna, arriving at about 8:15 pm.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book it if
You are staying in Vienna and want the village in one day, with the transport solved.
You want a low fare and are happy to explore the village on your own.
You want the Skywalk without queuing for the funicular yourself: pick the option.
You would like a photo stop at the lake palace on the way.
You travel with a child under three. This day does not take them; the private car from Salzburg
fits infant seats for up to four.
Eight hours on a coach is too much. From Salzburg, the half day is five and a
half hours in all.
Someone in your party uses a wheelchair: this day is not suitable. The private day from Prague
lists accessible transport.
What $74 covers, and what it leaves out
In the fare
Air-conditioned vehicle
Live English-speaking guide during the trip
Schloss Ort wedding bridge (30 minutes)
Hallstatt (around 3 hours)
Skywalk visit (if that option is booked)
Pickup from central Vienna hotels (if that option is booked)
Not in the fare
Food and drinks
Hotel drop-off
Boat ride
The Skywalk and the funicular, unless you book that option
The salt mine (€49 with the funicular)
Behind the State Opera, before the city wakes up
The coach leaves from the Tourist Info on Albertinaplatz, the square behind the
State Opera in the first district, and it comes back there at about 8:15 pm. On the pickup option
you are collected from a central Vienna hotel instead, but there is no drop-off: the day ends on
the square either way.
Book a hotel close to the Opera and the early start is a short walk. Where
to stay weighs a night in Vienna against a base nearer the lake, and the
map shows where the coaches stop in the village and how to walk into the centre.
Know before you go
Book a seat for every child. Infants need a seat of their own, and under-3s are not taken.
Bring snacks and water. Food is not in the fare, and lunch comes out of your free time.
Traffic can shorten the village. The time in the village depends on the road, and a jam comes out of it.
Luggage is fine. You can bring a bag on the coach, useful if you move on the next day.
Languages. The guide speaks English; the tour can also run in Russian.
Every day but one. It runs daily except 31 December.
What travellers said back in Vienna
★★★★★
A very early start, then a brilliant day: the funicular up to the Skywalk, and views worth every minute of the drive.

Two short stops kept the day from being tiring, and the time in Hallstatt was more than enough.

The guide's advice to stop planning and simply enjoy the village stayed with the whole couple long after the day.
No. No day from Vienna includes it, and the combined ticket with the funicular costs €49 in 2026. If the mine matters, stay a night in the region and go in the morning.
Can I see the Skywalk without the option?
Yes. Walk to the funicular in your free time and buy the €29 return. The footpath up is closed, so the funicular is the only way to the platform.
Does anyone guide us round the village?
The guide travels with the coach and the first hour is sightseeing, but the rest of the time is your own. For an hour's guided walk, pick the Vienna day with a walk in the village.
Is there a shorter day?
Not from Vienna. From Salzburg, the half day takes five and a half hours and gives two and a half in the village.
Can I skip the stop at the lake palace?
No, the stop is part of the route and lasts 30 minutes. The days by coach from Vienna with no stop on the way are on our page of Hallstatt day tour from Viennas.
What if I miss the coach home?
The return time is set on the day, and the coach cannot wait long in the village because of its booked slot. Be early.
