A morning in the village and an afternoon on the film tour, from one kiosk in Salzburg. The morning takes you through the lake villages to about two hours on your own in the village; the afternoon is the film tour, with the palace from the boat scene, the glass gazebo and a lake town with a yellow basilica. Ten hours in all, with a guide for each half.

Most mention the guides; some wish the day ran on one bus.
The morning road: Fuschl, St. Gilgen, Strobl, Bad Goisern
You exchange your voucher at the Panorama Tours kiosk on Mirabellplatz and board a bus east,
past the lakes of the Salzkammergut: Fuschl, St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee, Strobl and Bad
Goisern. The guide points out the sights on the way.
About two hours in Hallstatt
The time in the village is your own. Two hours is enough to walk the lakeshore, see the
Marktplatz and its painted houses, and climb to the Catholic church for the Bone House, which
keeps seasonal hours and costs €2. It is not enough for the salt mine, which the day rules out.
If you want the Skywalk, allow an hour of your two for the funicular (€29 return in 2026).
The bus comes back by a different road, past Gosau and Abtenau. The morning half is mostly
the drive, so if the village is what you came for, the half day gives you half an
hour more there and the afternoon free.
The Sound of Music afternoon
Back in Salzburg you change buses for the second tour: travellers who have done it describe a
midday change, and some retraced part of the morning road. The film tour starts in the city, with
a guide who knows both the Trapp family's real story and the film's. You stop for photos at
Schloss Leopoldskron, the lake palace from the boat scene, and at the gazebo from "Sixteen Going
on Seventeen".
Then the bus heads out again via St. Gilgen to Mondsee, a lake town east of the city,
where you get free time around the yellow Basilica St. Michael and the square beside it. Try the
apple strudel before the drive back to Salzburg. Every way to reach the village from the city is
on our page of Hallstatt tour from Salzburgs.
Useful tip. Eat in the village and snack in the
afternoon. Food and drinks are not in the fare, and the film tour keeps moving.

Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book it if
You have one day in Salzburg and want both the village and the film.
You are a fan of the film and want a guide who sings along.
You are happy with two hours in the village and a long day on the bus.
You want the evening back in the city.
Book something else if
You only want the village. The half day from Salzburg gives two and a half hours
there in five and a half.
You want longer in the village. The private car from Salzburg gives four
hours there, and St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen on the way.
You use a wheelchair. The listing is not clear either way; ask the operator before you book.
What $159 covers, and what it leaves out
In the fare
Air-conditioned bus
Guide
Not in the fare
Hotel pickup and drop-off
Food and drinks
The Bone House (€2) and the funicular (€29)
The kiosk in front of St. Andrä
You exchange your voucher for a ticket at the Panorama Tours kiosk on
Mirabellplatz, in front of St. Andrä Church, on the new-town side of the river. There is no hotel
pickup, so make your own way there; the day ends back in Salzburg.
The square is a short walk from the station and most new-town hotels. Where to stay weighs Salzburg against a night by the lake, and the best time to visit shows which months give the longest
light for a ten-hour day.
Know before you go

Food is not included. Buy lunch in the village and a strudel in the afternoon.

What travellers said after the sing-along
★★★★★
A funny guide for the Hallstatt morning, and a second guide for the film afternoon who was just as good.

The day uses two buses: you go back to Salzburg and change before the film tour. One bus would have saved time.
Kristine · United States · September 2026
★★★★☆
Two separate tours in one day, in effect. The first half is mostly the bus ride to Hallstatt and back, and the commentary on it was thin.
