Hallstatt Half-Day Tour from Salzburg
★★★★★ 4.7
(4,149 traveller reviews)
2.5 h in HallstattVillage time on your ownMirabellplatz, Salzburg
Five and a half hours, there and back, from a kiosk in the centre of Salzburg. A guide on the bus tells you about the lakes and the salt on the way out, then you have two and a half hours to explore the village as you please. The road home is a different one, past the Dachstein, so you see more country than you would on the same road twice.

Five and a half hours, two and a half in the village
Half a day, not a whole one
Back in the city in time for the afternoon or an early dinner.
Two and a half hours on your own
Enough for the lakeshore, the square and the Bone House at your own pace.
A guide in two languages
Commentary on the bus in English and German.
A loop, not a return
Out through the lake villages, back via Abtenau and Gosau below the Dachstein.

Travellers mention the scenic drive and the guides' tips for the village.
Out through the lake villages
You board at the Salzburg Panorama Tours kiosk and head east into the Salzkammergut, the
region of lakes and salt towns that runs from Salzburg to the Dachstein. The guide introduces the
village and the region as you drive, and tells you what to look for when you get there. From
Salzburg the village is much closer than from Vienna, which is why a half day works at all.
Two and a half hours on your own in Hallstatt
The guide stays with the bus: the time in the village is yours. Walk in along the lake, where
the houses seem stacked up the mountainside, past the waterfall of the Mühlbach and onto the
Marktplatz. Climb to the Catholic church for the Bone House, open with seasonal hours for €2, and
the museum on Seestraße tells the salt story for €12.
Two things do not fit. There is no time for the salt mine, and the bus will not wait for it.
If you want the Skywalk, make your own arrangements and allow an hour of your time for the
funicular ride: €29 return in 2026, the only way up while the footpath is closed. If you want
someone to show you the village, book a Hallstatt walking tour and meet your guide on the square.
Useful tip. Plan the two and a half hours before you
arrive. The lakeshore, the square and the Bone House fit easily; the Skywalk takes an hour of
them. Travellers on this day advise bringing some euros for small purchases.
The way back, below the Dachstein
You leave by a different road: over to Gosau, below the Dachstein, then through
Russbach and Abtenau back to Salzburg. It is the reason the half day feels longer than its hours.
If you would rather stop at the lakes on the way, the private cars on our page of
Hallstatt private tours stop at Gosausee and St. Gilgen, at your pace, for a higher fare.
The five and a half hours, stage by stage

Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book it if
You are staying in Salzburg and have half a day to spare.
You want the village on your own terms, with no group to keep up with.
You would like the afternoon or evening free in the city.
You would rather not work out the buses and the change at Bad Ischl yourself.
Book something else if
You want the salt mine. There is no time on this day; the private car from Salzburg
gives four hours in the village for up to four people.
Someone in your party uses a wheelchair. This day is not suitable, and the village lanes
are steep in places.

The Panorama kiosk, at the edge of the gardens
You meet at the Salzburg Panorama Tours kiosk, on the corner where
Hubert-Sattler-Gasse meets Mirabellplatz, on the new-town side of the river by the Mirabell
gardens. The bus brings you back to the same place.
The kiosk is a short walk from most hotels in the new town and across the river from the old
town. Where to stay compares Salzburg with a night by the lake,
and the visitor guide covers the trains and buses if you would rather
go on your own.
Know before you go
The village time is free time. The guide rides with the bus and does not walk the village with you.
Entry fees are extra. Nothing inside the village is in the fare.
No time for the salt mine. The bus leaves before a mine visit could end.
The Bone House keeps seasonal hours. Shorter from October, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays from November to March.
Allow an hour for the Skywalk. If you go, the funicular takes a big share of your time.
No pets. Pets are not allowed on the bus.
What travellers said back at the kiosk
★★★★★
A sensible arrangement, given how complicated Hallstatt is to reach on your own.

Easier than the train, and enough time to wander the lanes and see the ossuary.

The guide stayed with the bus rather than coming into the village, but shared a great deal on the way there and back.
No. The guide is on the bus, and the two and a half hours in the village are free time. A Hallstatt walking tour gives you a guide of your own on foot.
Can I fit in the salt mine?
No. There is no time for it, and the bus leaves on schedule. The private car from Salzburg gives four hours in the village, enough to try.
Can I add the Sound of Music?
Yes, on a different ticket: the full day spends the morning in the village and the afternoon on the film tour. It takes ten hours.
Can I do the Skywalk?
Yes, on your own. Allow an hour and buy the €29 funicular return at the bottom station.
